As t he younger generation of the 1950s grew older, however, disenchantment with the idealized American lifestyle, which had in some cases already been around, seemed to grow. In Takin It to the Streets, the author writes that young people resist the efforts of adults to shape and control their maturation (9). The refusal of children to follow in their parents footsteps is one of the first signs of a generation gap growing between the parents of the 50s and what will be the children of the 60s. A generation gap that is characterized not by conformity, but rather change, sweeping change that alters the course of America and American history. Growing men in the family saw through their fathers that the roles they would play, in the idealized family, were not very fulfilling. This was evident in the high rate of divorce, alcoholism, heart disease, and other personal and social disorders prevalent among breadwinners (Breines, 10). Young women too saw no bright future if they followed the female path so championed in the 1950s. A path that only led to two titles: wife and mother, a path in which there was no future outside of the family. The result of these young peoples resistance to the trends set forth by their parents were the social movements of the 1960s-movements that were reactions against the conformity instilled into the American people through the threat of the Cold War and Communism. The cause of the 1960s was not one of preservation, but rather change, for people of the 60s no longer saw America as an ideal place, but rather as a place that demanded change. No longer was the focus on family, instead young people of the 1960s focused on the problems of America and American society. While white America did not wake up to social issues (on a large scale) until the 1960s, many black Americans started to champion civil rights, with limited success, in the 1950s. Mercury What Is Mercury? As anyone who's ever broken a thermometer can attest, mercury is a fascinating substance. It also has an interesting history. Named after the fleet-footed Roman messenger of the gods, mercury has been used for more than 2,000 years. Mercury ore cinnabar has even been found smeared on Neolithic skulls. Its first recorded mention is a reference by Aristotle in the fourth century B.C., a time when the silvery-white, heavy metal was used in religious ceremonies. Spanish miners used mercury to process gold ore for ancient Rome; when their mercury supply ran out, gold production dropped and set in motion the decline of the Roman Empire. Today mercury poses a serious threat, this time environmental. Human beings around the world cause mercury to enter the atmosphere primarily when they burn coal or incinerate waste. Studies from Sweden and Florida suggest that mercury also evaporates from landfills, but only 0.0001 per cent. Groundwater contamination from old dumps is of concern but combustion is the major path via which mercury pollutes the globe. Mercury rarely exists in a free state in nature; it's recovered from red mercuric sulphide in geologically recent volcanic rocks. The world inventory of mined mercury is estimated at 600,000 tonnes, stored mostly in states of the former Soviet Union. (Mercury has not been mined in Canada since 1975.) Michael Corleone is a fictional antihero in films The Godfather and The Godfather Part II Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The films are based on the novel by Mario Puzo, The Godfather. The films follow the lives of the fictional Corleone family. The Corleone family is a mafia family that dwells in New York City in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Michael was born into the mafia family, but for many years stayed out of the â€Å"family business†. Michael went to an Ivy League school and fought in World War II from which he returned a war hero. Michael intended to stay out of the Family business and out of the criminal empire. Michael did manage to stay out until an attempted assassination on his father, and as a result, Michael had to kill to save his father. After Michael killed the people who wished to kill his father Michael fled to Ita ly. It is Italy when Michael begins his transition from a hero to a monster. Why did Michael Corleone become a monster? While in Italy Michael thought he was in paradise, for he had found a woman that he was in love with and he lived a simple life with no interference from his mafia family. Michaels peace and tranquility in Italy was shattered when he heard the word that his older brother Sonny was violently slain like an animal. This event was the start of Michaels descent to darkness, for he had a loved one taken away from him at the hands of another mafia family. The death of his brother was sudden and unexpected in fact, his death left a lasting impact on the entire family. After the death of his brother Michael attempted to flee Italy with his new spouse, however before they could leave a bomb was planted in the car with the intention to kill Michael, however, when the bomb detonated it only killed Michaels wife. Michael’s sense of helplessness is solidified, and his character has been shattered, for now, seeks to combat such atrocities with equally atrocious actions. Once Michael’s father died and Michael became the head of the house he proved to be even more ruthless and brut al than his father because of the lost loved ones. Shortly after Michaels father died Michael had every other mob boss assassinated in one day. Michael had all the other bosses killed as a preventive protection for his own family, for this is a measure that Michael would not have taken before the loss of his brother and spouse. Michael started his transition to a monster the loss of his spouse and brother were the catalysts to create the monster that is to be Don Michael Corleone. Being betrayed by one’s own kin is truly a reason to be upset, and Michael must deal with his brother betraying him to reap benefits that the enemy had promised. Michaels brother Fredo traded information about Michael to an emery mob boss of Michael. Michael disowns his brother, Fredo, for Michael feels as if there is nobody that he can trust now, not even members of the family. The loss of a child is hard to cope with for any parent, however, the death of Michael Corleone’s unborn child was a crushing blow to his human soul. Michaels wife Kay had murdered the unborn child. The betrayal that Michael was met with by his wife was enough to destroy what human was left inside of his body. Michael had not only lost a child, for he had also lost the trust of his wife. Michaels wife murdered the unborn child because she did not want to bring another son into this world whose father is Michael Corleone because she had realized that Michael was becoming a monster. Fredo had betrayed Michael and as a result, Michael told his assassin for hire that Fredo was not to be touched while their mother was still alive. Upon the death of Michael and Fredo’s mother, Fredo was assassinated. Even though Michael had told Fredo that he had forgiven him, Michael still had Fredo assassinated. Michael had become the man that he despised as a young man, he became a vicious killer in charge of a criminal family. Michaels transition to a monster can be supported by Jeffrey Cohens, Monster culture (seven theses). Cohen uses seven theses to describe how monsters are made and why monsters are monsters. Cohens thesis titled â€Å"Thesis VI: Fear of the Monster Is Really a Kind of Desire† describes the situation that Michael has landed in. The thesis states that while humans may be afraid of a monster, such a monster has characteristics that a human would willingly l ike to acquire, for example, superhuman strength and speed in the case of Vampires. In Michaels case, he wishes to protect his family, but to do so he must become the monster that he did not want to become. This monster is a murderous mafia boss, and his desire to protect himself and what family he has left leaves him with no choice but to become the monster that he never wanted to become. But he murdered his own brother with that power so the initial desire to protect his family was violated and instead Michael used his new power for vengeance. Michael Corleone became a monster because he had been plagued with betrayal and loss, and as a result, he sought to prevent such things by becoming the monster he never wanted to be by embracing the violent capabilities that a mafia family has. The loss of his wife and brother, while Michael was in Italy, was the start of the evolution that Michaels soul would undergo. Following the pain and sorrow from lost loved ones, Michael had been betrayed by people that he loved and trusted, which added to his unhealthy mindset of distrust. The final step to becoming the monster that he didn’t want to be as a young man was embracing his desire for vengeance and murdering his brother. Black Holes Everyday we look out upon the night sky, wondering and dreaming of what lies beyond our planet. The universe that we live in is so diverse and unique, and it interests us to learn about all the variance that lies beyond our grasp. Within this marvel of wonders our universe holds a mystery that is very difficult to understand because of the complications that arise when trying to examine and explore the principles of space. That mystery happens to be that of the ever clandestine, black hole. This essay will hopefully give you the knowledge and understanding of the concepts, properties, and processes involved with the space phenomenon of the black hole. It will describe how a black hole is generally formed, how it functions, and the effects it has on the universe. In order to understand what exactly a black hole is, we must first take a look at the basis for the cause of a black hole. All black holes are formed from the gravitational collapse of a star, usually having a great, massive, core. A star is created when huge, gigantic, gas clouds bind together due to attractive forces and form a hot core, combined from all the energy of the two gas clouds. This energy produced is so great when it first collides, that a nuclear reaction occurs and the gases within the star start to burn continuously. The Hydrogen gas is usually the first type of gas consumed in a star and then other gas elements such as Carbon, Oxygen, and Helium are consumed. This chain reaction fuels the star for millions or billions of years depending upon the amount of gases there are. The star manages to avoid collapsing at this point because of the equilibrium achieved by itself. The gravitational pull from the core of the star is equal to the gravitational pull of the gases forming a type of orbit, however when this equality is broken the star can go into several different stages. Usually if the star is small in mass, most of the gases will be consumed while some of it escapes. This occurs because there is not a tremendous gravitational pull upon those gases and therefore the star weakens and becomes smaller. It is then referred to as a White Dwarf. If the star was to have a larger mass however, then it may possibly Supernova, meaning that the nuclear fusion within the star simply goes out of control causing the star to explode. After exploding a fraction of the star is usually left (if it has not turned into pure gas) and that fraction of the star is known as a neutron star. A black hole is one of the last option that a star may take. If the core of the star is so massive (approximately 6-8 solar masses; one solar mass being equal to the sun's mass) then it is most likely that when the star's gases are almost consumed those gases will collapse inward, forced into the core by the gravitational force laid upon them. After a black hole is created, the gravitational force continues to pull in space debris and other type of matters to help add to the mass of the core, making the hole stronger and more powerful. Most black holes tend to be in a consistent spinning motion. This motion absorbs various matter and spins it within the ring (known as the Event Horizon) that is formed around the black hole. The matter keeps within the Event Horizon until it has spun into the centre where it is concentrated within the core adding to the mass. Such spinning black holes are known as Kerr Black Holes. Most black holes orbit around stars due to the fact that they once were a star, and this may cause some problems for the neighboring stars. If a black hole gets powerful enough it may actually pull a star into it and disrupt the orbit of many other stars. The black hole could then grow even stronger (from the star's mass) as to possibly absorb another.
